A
much hungover (including a puffed-up, sick smelling Jurgen)
Cavaliers squad travelled through beautiful countryside
to the quaint surroundings of Thorncombe. Although some
team members were stuck in traffic or looking at “the
big owl” near Stonehenge the Cavs were confident to
get a first win under their belts. A lovely view and an
exciting game of british bulldog being played by a set of
10yr olds could have distracted the liers as they went out
to field, but instead they put in a ruthless and relentless
display.
Opening
bowlers Tant and Burton were soon amongst the wickets with
Chesney taking 3 wickets in his 6 over spell. The best of
the rest came from an unlikely source. Jurgen, who hadn’t
seen it past the restaurant the night before, trundled in
like oil tanker but produced 6 overs of spin that any bogey
would be proud of. The home side eventually limped to 121-7
from their 40overs.
With
a low total to chase, the lowers were given a chance to
stand up and be counted so BCR and TimmyF were thrown in
at the start. After 4 overs and only 3 runs on the board
the tourist squad were getting restless. However, the hard
work was done and Harmony in particular started to open
up. The boundaries began to flow – although BCR did
have a habit of picking out the guy with British Gas overalls
at mid off rather too much. A variety of bowlers, wearing
a variety of clothes (other than cricket whites) came and
went before Rankin smashed a six into the pavilion to bring
up his 50. Gracefully he retired to bring Firms to the wicket,
which was to prove a master stroke. As usual, Hootie got
things happening and entertained the crowds with some huge
sixes and solid defence. TimmyF ended up 43no and it was
left to Meo to bring the team home and notch up a very convincing
win for the Cavaliers.
Thorncombe
showed great hospitality and did get their own back by wiping
the floor with us at skittles. The Cavaliers returned to
Yeovil ready for a night out….apart from Ellis who
went to bed at 8pm.
