Match reports

Redbourn - 2003

Anyone who read the Hollybush match report needn't bothering reading this
one, since the clash with Redbourn was a virtual re-run, and nearly as
disappointing.

Debutant skipper Ellis won the toss and put the cavs in the field.  This
Decision was soon vindicated when Frase, bowling like the Chianti of old,
got a double breakthrough to see off both openers, the first comfortably
pouched by the Goat at first slip, the second clean bowled with an
inswinging yorker.  Tigerish fielding and tight bowling ensured that our
hosts were under pressure throughout, with Jimmy Hat (twice), Snr (again),
new cap Nick "Trevor" Francis and Frase all taking good catches while the
bowling from Cavs hopeful SO'B was virtually unplayable while BCR's F&G was
a joy to behold.  If the Cavs were guilty of anything, it was perhaps taking
the foot of the pedal, with Redbourn 7 down with only 80 odd on the board
and with Sean, Frase and Jimmy Hat with overs in hand, and this allowed
Redders to inch to 127 before the final wicket fell.

128 was the lowest score the Cavs had been challenged to chase all season,
and with a fair to middling batting line up, it should have been a breeze.
After BCR fell in the first over, Jay and Jimmy Hat took the cavs to half
the required total, but then followed the inevitable middle order collapse
that has been the curse of the purple and blacks all season.  The two J's
fell in close succession, Tant came and went without troubling the scorers,
then Snr, Timmy F and Lloydy, and Elbow for a duck.  The damage was largely
done by a nippy left armer who basically simply aimed at the twigs, and that
was all it took, and over winter nets the Cavs need to take a long, hard
look at their techniques. As Jimmy Hat said, "Perfect practice makes
perfect, shit practice is a waste of time." Only a gutsy rearguard from Sean
saved the Cavs from humiliation, his 20 not out inching us towards the
target, before he was left stranded with 10 more runs required.

Despite a face-saving victory in a fiercely-fought stump game, morale was
undeniably low as the cavs mulled over yet another defeat.  One win, 9
defeats so far in 2003, not a great return.  Can the Cavs end the season on
a high on next weekends unofficial official tour to Walton-on-Thames next
weekend?
