Radlett - 2003

The first game of a new season and hopes were high that the Cavs could produce something special against one of Hertfordshire's finest clubs. Alas, it wasn't to be. A lovely ground, great weather and the promise of stitching Tant up in the bar after the match in a pre-stag do stag do, sent the team charging into the field after the toss was, erm, agreed. Paul Wise started the season in fine form taking early scalps and the Lowers (Firmin, Foster, Rankin) helped out by ripping out the middle order. Special mention goes to Rankin who did the Cambridge blue with his 'mystery' ball - the ball that's so much of a mystery the bowler himself doesn't know what it does ie. the straight one. Tweatkin also nabbed another couple before the Radlett innings was wrapped up. A score approaching 200 was needed by the cavs but a decent looking order had in in them - on paper, at least - to do the business. J Wise started well, but fellow opener Rankin went early. The Judge departed soon after. The Goat kept the innings going and after cameos from The Hat and Elbo, PJW chipped in with some much-needed runs. Special mention must also go to Foster Jnr who scored as many runs on this day as he had done in the four previous seasons. It wasn't to be, though, and we fell well short of the required total. But when the team needs a boost and we have to prove to the opposition we're good at something - out comes The Stump Game, which we excel at. The game was duly won - despite El almost disappearing onto the railway track after his half of shandy. So with heads held high the Cavs shot off to Fishpool St where Chianti, as was predicted, ended up in trouble. Several traffic lights, a few kebabs, and one broken coffee table rounded off a top quality day out.
