Players
and Jesters - 2003
It's
just not our season. After success at Essendon, everyone
thought we'd turned the corner and were set for a string
of victories. But the Players have always proved tough opponents
and they were no different this year, edging home in a closely-fought
game. Our innings got off to a flyer thanks to Frazer 'Ally
Brown' Tant, who hit 45 off 12 scoring shots (most of them
taken off middle stump) and Rankin who nudged around the
wicket for 38. But when both fell in quick-ish succession
the middle order faltered: first, when the Judge did his
back in trying to lift Excalibur off the ground and deliberately
holed out next ball, and second, when jimmy hat's miserable
batting form continued and he knocked one back to the bowler.
Enter this season's MVP, Snr, to steady the ship, though,
and score a nifty nifty. Special mention must also go to
Barry who carried the fight and made sure we ended up with
a defendable total. In reply the Players lost a couple of
early wickets to the Cavs Caddick and Gough combo - T Foster
and T Firmin. Their overseas player - another Springbok
- batted nicely before our 12th man (their umpire) triggered
him lbw, but with their opener going well and others contributing
the Players had enough in their locker and wrapped the game
up with two and a bit overs to go. Disappointing, but if
ever there was a time to show what the Cavs are made of
its next week. Seany, we're coming to get you!
